History of The Simpletons Club

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

The Simpletons Club was established on the 20th November 1961 as a not-for-profit public speaking club run for and by its members. The Club’s founders were graduates of a Speech In Management course at the City Lit and its name derived from the initials S. I. M. It was originally intended as a forum where those new to public speaking could continue to learn and develop their public speaking skills for use in their business and personal lives in an encouraging, safe environment. These aims are still true today. However the Club has evolved into a group of people with a passion for human communication in its widest forms and not just focused on public speaking in a professional context. Today it provides its members with the opportunity to learn and practice the diverse ways in which humans can communicate knowledge, ideas, humour, entertainment or motivation. In fact whatever message needs to be imparted to another person, all in a friendly and informal environment, without an exclusive focus on business or management.
